The Tongariro River and Lake Taupo were first made famous in the 1920’s by Zane Gray, the world renowned American author and angler. The Queen Mother, Presidents and many famous people have since cast a line in this fabled river. Tongariro Lodge itself was established in 1982 by legendary angler and guide Tony Hayes, originally as an 8 unit Fishing Lodge and has enjoyed considerable fame and success ever since.
Situated within 22 acres of park like grounds separate and private guest accommodation is provided on the banks of the Tongariro River. Each chalet has private facilities and its own secluded sunny terrace with views of the Tongariro River or mountains beyond. Two exclusive accommodation choices are provided for guests enjoyment, 2-5 bedroom villas and one bedroom chalets.
2-5 Bedroom Villas
Escape to luxury in magnificently appointed 2-5 bedroom villas that provide plenty of space along with quality furnishings. Enjoy separate, open plan lounge and dining areas with snug armchairs, deep drapes and sky television. Each villa has private bathroom and ensuite facilities, a full kitchen and laundry. King beds and a variety of bedding options are available upon request.
1 Bedroom Chalets
For a less expensive option guests can enjoy the original Tongariro Lodge chalets. These are stylish and well appointed one bedroom chalets with quality furnishings, comfortable king beds (other bedding configurations available upon request) tea and coffee making facilities, television and internet broadband connection. Each chalet has a drying cupboard for waders.

Many trophy trout over 10lbs are landed by Tongariro Lodge guests each year, with an overall average of over 4 lbs.
The Tongariro River is the most famous fly fishing river in New Zealand. Every year over 50 thousand prime conditioned trout migrate up this river from Lake Taupo, providing truly amazing year-round fly fishing opportunity.

Through the experience of the guiding team, special access to many rivers that run through private land has been acquired. Every year the guides get out and explore more ‘waters’ for their clients to enjoy. This area truly is a vast fishery that can provide the trout fishing experience of a lifetime year round to the beginner and expert alike. The lodge runs its own rafts, four wheel drive vehicles and boats, and have some of the best back country nymph and dry fly fishing for sighted browns and rainbows to be found anywhere. The helicopter access options offer truly remarkable fishing, and From October to April, guests enjoy this ultimate wilderness fly fishing experience from the Lodge. Tongariro Lodge has special access to large areas of private land that provides anglers with helicopter access to fourteen wilderness rivers, and includes up to 60 kilometres of trophy flyfishing for brown and rainbows.

Tongariro Lodge is situated on the banks of the legendary Tongariro River on the southern shores of Lake Taupo, Turangi, North Island, New Zealand.
Guests need to fly into Auckland, New Zealand following which there are a multitude of options as far as getting from Auckland to the lodge. Please contact us for more information.

- From Oct- December temperatures average around 15-20 degrees farenheit
- From Dec April it is mid summer and temperatures ave 20-25 degrees farenheit
Boats, rafts and 4 wheel drive vehicles:
Lodge guides provide comfortable 4wd vehicles and open 5- 6 metre comfortable boats are sometimes used to fish the lakes. A days wilderness rafting or helicopter access fishing can also be arranged at extra cost.

- 9ft 4wt, 5wt, 6wt freshwater outfits are ideal, with most of the fishing done with floating lines, long leaders and a host of nymph, dry fly and streamer patterns.A comprehensive tackle and gear list along with an order form (should you wish to purchase your tackle through us) is issued after your booking has been confirmed. The guides will also carry stock of suitable flies and other terminal tackle, should you run out.
