Vanderkloof Dam and the section of the Orange River that flows out of this enormous body of water offers world class fly fishing for Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellowfish! Comparable with some of the finest freshwater fisheries on the planet, the scenarios and numbers of unpressurised fish which reside in these waters make it a must fish venue for both local and international fly anglers. Whether your interest lies in throwing dry flies to sighted Smallmouth Yellowfish cruising just below the surface or throwing streamers for South Africa’s premier freshwater predatory species the Largemouth Yellowfish, Camp Vanderkloof is sure to impress.
Situated just below the Vanderkloof Dam wall on a private working farm in South Africa’s Northern Cape province, Camp Vanderkloof provides our guests with easy access to over 20km of highly productive Orange River as well a seemingly endless supply of coves, bays, rocky outcrops and islands which the dam itself has to offer. It is simply the ideal location!
Guests are accommodated in a simple but comfortable lodge situated meters away from the Orange River and one of our premier fishing beats. The private lodge has 6 guest rooms each containing two single beds and en suite bathroom, a large dining area where all breakfast and evening meals are served, as well as self contained bar area. Each guest will have his or her own room. Meals are a mix of international and South African cuisine, which are prepared daily by our resident chef Marnus.
On top of the self-drive option into camp (JHB – 6h 30min, CT – 8h 30 min, Durban – 8h 30 min) there are multiple commercial flight and airline options for guests to fly into Kimberley or Bloemfontein from Johannesburg, Durban or Cape Town. It’s an easy 2-hour drive from Kimberley or easy 3-hour drive from Bloemfontein. We can arrange transfers for guests or guests can arrange their own rental cars. There is also an option to charter a private aircraft out of Wonderboom airport at very competitive rates.
The fishing options and flexibility this fishery offers is one of its great assets. Guests preferences towards river or dam fishing as well as their preference towards species and fishing methods will be requested by the guides each evening in order for them to work on a game plan to suit your needs. Breakfast times, as well as a decision whether to take packed lunches out on the water or come back to the lodge for lunch etc will depend entirely on the day’s fishing plan.
The +/-20km section of the Orange River which flows out of Vanderkloof Dam offers arguably the finest section of Yellowfish water in South African. There are huge numbers of Smallmouth Yellows consistently feeding in the shallows, whilst trophy Largemouth Yellows cruise the numerous deeper runs, pools, drop offs and rocky ledges. Some of the finest sight fishing we have seen occurs on this piece of river, our home rapid often producing forty fish Smallmouth sessions on dry fly. There is also a healthy population of Largemouth Yellows that weigh in excess of 10lbs for anglers who enjoy throwing streamers and who are looking for that potential fish of a lifetime. In addition to these two major species, there are good numbers of Carp and Sharptooth Catfish that can be targeted on fly. The majority of our river fishing takes place by wading or walking the banks, with small inflatables used purely to access the more productive areas.
There is generally a daily release of water out of the dam at around 9am each morning for hydroelectric purposes. This provides us with two fishing sessions on the river, one early in the morning and one in the afternoon, both of which produce superb dry fly action. For anglers with the desire to fish all day, the lodge is a short 5km drive from the municipal slipway on the dam, where we launch one of our custom-built 17,6ft boats to enjoy more exciting sight fishing for Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellows.
Vanderkloof Dam which is primarily fed by the Orange River is South Africa’s second largest storage reservoir, with a capacity of over 3 200 million m3. Equally impressive and even more so from a fishing point of view, is the fact that it has over 270km of shoreline containing rocky points, ledges, gravel bars, sandy flats etc all of which hold high numbers of fish.
The general clarity of the dam provides prime sight fishing opportunities for both Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellows. We use three custom designed & built motorized boats, each with 70hp engines, to run to the productive areas. All boats are fitted with electric trolling motors so guests can fish from the comfort of the boat. It’s immensely exciting watching a string of Smallmouth Yellows come round a rocky point and watch them causally suck down your favourite hopper pattern or try to hold your nerve as Largemouth Yellowfish appears off a point and reacts instantly as your streamer hits the water 10ft ahead of him.
